Brisbane’s climate means a lot of living happens outdoors – decks, alfresco areas, patios and outdoor kitchens get used most of the year. Yet it’s still common to find a deck with a single indoor-rated power point stretched to with an extension cord, or lighting run off a cheap plug-in string with no fixed switch. Done properly, outdoor power and lighting is straightforward and not particularly expensive – done badly, it’s one of the more common electrical safety failures we find on Brisbane homes.
What AS/NZS 3000 Requires Outdoors
Any power point installed outdoors, or in a location exposed to weather, has to be weatherproof – rated to the appropriate IP (ingress protection) standard, in a weatherproof enclosure, and protected by an RCD (safety switch) under AS/NZS 3000. This isn’t optional or a nice-to-have: it’s what stands between a wet deck and a genuine shock risk. A standard indoor GPO in a supposedly sheltered spot under an eave doesn’t meet this on its own – the enclosure and switch rating both need to be correct for an outdoor installation, and covered or semi-exposed locations still typically need weatherproof fittings.
Planning Power for a Deck or Alfresco Area
Think through what you’ll actually plug in before deciding on point count and location: an outdoor fridge or bar fridge, a pizza oven or barbecue with electric ignition, string lighting, a phone charging point, pond or water feature pumps, and increasingly, outdoor speakers or a TV. It’s far cheaper to run an extra circuit and a couple of extra weatherproof GPOs while the deck is being built or the wall is open than to chase cable through finished cladding afterwards. As a rule of thumb, two to three double weatherproof GPOs comfortably covers a typical Brisbane alfresco or deck area, positioned away from likely water pooling and with enough separation from any sink or wash-down area.
Lighting Options for Outdoor Areas
Options range from simple bulkhead or downlight fittings under an eave, to LED strip lighting recessed into deck edges and step nosings, to freestanding post or bollard lights for a garden path. A dimmer or a two-circuit split (general illumination plus a softer entertaining setting) makes a real difference to how usable the space feels at night. Whatever fitting is chosen, it needs an outdoor IP rating suited to its exposure – fully exposed to weather needs a higher rating than a fitting tucked under a solid eave.
What It Costs in Brisbane
Pricing depends heavily on access – a new deck or renovation with open framing is far cheaper to wire than retrofitting into an existing finished structure. As a guide only, expect from around $250–$400 per weatherproof double GPO installed, from around $150–$300 per outdoor light point, and more if a new dedicated circuit back to the switchboard is required rather than an extension of an existing one. Getting it quoted alongside other works – a deck build, a kitchen renovation, or a switchboard upgrade – is usually the most cost-effective way to add outdoor power and lighting.
Common Mistakes We See
- Running an extension cord permanently – not compliant for a fixed appliance and a common trip and moisture hazard on a deck
- Non-weatherproof fittings in “sheltered” spots – wind-driven rain and humidity reach further under an eave than most people expect
- No RCD protection on the outdoor circuit – a requirement, not an option, for any outdoor power point
- Plug-in string lighting as a permanent fixture – fine for a one-off party, not a long-term outdoor lighting solution
- Underestimating point count – leads to double adaptors and overloaded circuits once the outdoor fridge and the pizza oven both get added later

If you’re planning a deck, patio or outdoor kitchen, it’s worth having an electrician walk the site before any decking or cladding goes down – running cable through open framing is a fraction of the cost of chasing it into a finished structure later. If the area already exists and power or lighting was never properly run, it’s still very doable as a standalone job, usually completed in a single visit for a straightforward deck or alfresco area.
