Smart lighting has moved well past novelty status. Brisbane homeowners are asking for app-controlled switches, voice-activated lights and scheduled outdoor lighting almost as often as they ask for LED upgrades. Done properly, smart lighting is a genuine upgrade to comfort, security and energy use. Done badly, it’s an expensive gadget pile that half the household can’t work. Here’s how to tell the difference.
Smart switch, smart bulb or smart plug?
These get lumped together but they’re different jobs:
- Smart bulbs – screw or bayonet LED bulbs with built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. No wiring work, but every physical light switch on that circuit has to stay “on” at all times, which trips up a lot of households.
- Smart plugs – plug-in units for lamps and portable appliances. Cheap and no licensed work required, but limited to plug-in loads.
- Smart switches – hardwired wall switches that replace your existing switch plate and control the fixed lighting circuit properly. This is the option that actually behaves like a normal light switch for every person in the house, and it’s the one that requires a licensed electrician.
The neutral wire problem in older Brisbane homes
Most hardwired smart switches need a neutral wire at the switch plate to power their Wi-Fi radio. Many older Queenslanders and post-war Brisbane homes were wired with switch loops that only carry active and switched-active conductors, with no neutral present at the switch. Before you buy switches, this needs to be checked – retrofitting a neutral can mean running a new cable back to the ceiling space or switchboard, which changes the cost. We check this at quote stage so there are no surprises once a switch is out of the box and sitting on the bench.
Where smart lighting is actually worth it
Not every room needs it. The upgrades that consistently earn their keep in Brisbane homes are:
- Outdoor and entry lighting – scheduled or dusk-to-dawn operation, and it pairs well with a CCTV or security system so lights and cameras respond together.
- Living and entertaining areas – dimming and “scenes” for evening use, especially alfresco and deck areas.
- Hallways and stairs – motion-triggered smart switches instead of always-on lighting.
- Rooms with existing LED downlights – if you’ve already done a compliant downlight upgrade, adding a smart dimmer switch is a small extra job with a big usability gain, provided the driver is dimmable-compatible.
What it costs in Brisbane
As a rough guide: a straightforward hardwired smart switch swap where a neutral is already present typically runs from $180-$280 installed per switch, including the electrician’s compliance testing. Where a neutral has to be run in, or a dimmer needs a compatible LED driver upgrade, allow more – we’ll always price this on site rather than guess. A basic smart plug is under $30 with no trade required, and smart bulbs sit somewhere in between depending on brand and how many you fit out.
Compliance and safety
Any work on fixed wiring or a wall switch plate is electrical work under Queensland’s Electrical Safety Act and must be carried out by a licensed electrician, then tested and, where required, connected to a certificate of compliance. This isn’t optional for hardwired smart switches, and it protects you if you ever sell the property or make an insurance claim. Cheap unbranded smart switches bought online and self-installed are a common fail point we get called out to fix – stick to a licensed installer and a switch rated to AS/NZS 3000.
A sensible starting point
If you’re new to smart lighting, start with outdoor/entry lighting and one living area, confirm the app and voice control work the way your household actually wants to use them, then expand room by room. That’s a far better outcome than fitting out the whole house in one go and finding out the ecosystem doesn’t suit you.
