A breaker or safety switch that keeps tripping is frustrating — but it’s also your electrical system doing exactly what it’s designed to do: shutting off power to prevent a fire or shock. The trick is working out why. Here are the most common causes in Brisbane homes and what you can safely check before calling an electrician.
1. Overloaded circuit
The most common cause is simply too much demand on one circuit — for example, a heater, kettle and microwave all running off the same line. The breaker trips to stop the wiring overheating. Try spreading appliances across different circuits. If a circuit trips constantly even under normal use, it may be undersized for how you live and need attention.
2. A faulty appliance
A failing appliance is a frequent culprit, especially when a safety switch (the one with the TEST button) trips. To test this: unplug everything on the affected circuit, reset the switch, then plug items back in one at a time. The appliance that trips it is your problem. Stop using it and have it checked or replaced.
3. A short circuit
If a live wire touches a neutral or earth — through damaged cable, a dodgy power point, or a pest chewing wiring — it causes a short circuit and an instant trip. This needs a licensed electrician to locate and repair safely.
4. Moisture or earth leakage
Brisbane’s humidity and storms can let moisture into outdoor power points, sheds or roof spaces, causing current to leak to earth and trip a safety switch. This is common after heavy rain.
What you can safely do
You can reset a tripped switch once, spread your appliance load, and use the unplug-and-reconnect test above to find a faulty appliance. What you should not do is repeatedly force a switch back on that keeps tripping, or open up wiring yourself — that’s both dangerous and illegal in Queensland.
When to call an electrician
Call a licensed electrician if a circuit trips repeatedly with nothing obvious plugged in, if you notice burning smells or scorch marks, or if a safety switch won’t reset at all.
