Queensland has some of the strictest smoke alarm laws in the country, and they affect every Brisbane home. Whether you live in your house, rent it out, or are getting ready to sell, it pays to understand exactly what’s required — because the rules are about far more than ticking a compliance box. Modern interconnected alarms give your family precious extra minutes to get out safely.
What the law requires
Under Queensland legislation, domestic smoke alarms must be photoelectric (not ionisation), less than 10 years old, and operate when tested. Most importantly, they must be interconnected — so when one alarm detects smoke, every alarm in the house sounds at once. Alarms must be either hardwired to the mains or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.
Where smoke alarms must be installed
The law requires interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms to be installed:
- In every bedroom
- In hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the home
- On every storey of the dwelling, even where there are no bedrooms on that level
Key deadlines
The requirements have been rolling out in stages. Homes that are sold or leased (including lease renewals) have already needed to comply since 1 January 2022. From 1 January 2027, every Queensland home — owner-occupied included — must meet the full interconnected photoelectric standard. If your home still has older alarms, now is the time to plan the upgrade rather than scrambling at the deadline.
Hardwired vs battery alarms
Both hardwired and 10-year sealed-battery alarms are legal, but hardwired interconnected alarms are the most reliable long-term solution and are wired in by a licensed electrician. They can be interconnected by cable or wirelessly, which is handy in existing homes where running new cabling through every room isn’t practical.
Why use a licensed electrician
Hardwired smoke alarm work is electrical work and must be carried out by a licensed electrician in Queensland. A professional install also makes sure your alarms are correctly positioned, genuinely interconnected, and compliant with the current standard — not just bought off the shelf and stuck to the ceiling. Integrated Trade Services is a licensed Brisbane electrical contractor (Electrical Contractor Licence 89947) and can assess your home and bring it fully up to code.
