The outdoor unit often gets fitted wherever there’s a spare bit of wall or ground, as an afterthought. That’s a mistake. Why Placement Affects Performance, Not Just Noise
An outdoor unit needs clear airflow to dump heat effectively. Wedge it into a tight side-passage, hard against a fence, or under a low eave with poor ventilation, and it has to work harder to do the same job – which shows up as higher running costs and a shorter compressor life. As a rule of thumb, allow at least 300–500mm of clearance from walls and fences on the sides, and more again in front of the discharge airflow, though exact clearances vary by brand and model and should follow the manufacturer’s installation manual.

- On a solid, level base – a concrete pad or dedicated bracket, with anti-vibration feet, reduces the rattle and hum that timber-framed mounting can pick up
- Out of direct west-facing sun where practical, since a unit baking in full afternoon sun runs less efficiently in summer
- With service access maintained – a technician needs to reach the isolator switch, filters and coil for future servicing without removing fencing or furniture
The Electrical Side
Every outdoor unit needs a dedicated isolating switch within sight of (and reasonably close to) the unit itself, wired and installed to AS/NZS 3000 – this lets a technician safely isolate power before servicing. Larger or ducted systems typically need their own circuit back to the switchboard rather than sharing a general power circuit. If a neighbour raises a noise concern about an existing installation, or you’re getting complaints about your own unit, the first step is usually a straightforward site check: confirm mounting is solid (loose brackets and worn anti-vibration feet are common culprits), check nothing is rattling against the casing, and confirm the unit isn’t running with a failing fan bearing or a refrigerant issue that’s making it work harder than it should. In some cases, relocating the unit slightly, adding an acoustic barrier, or fitting vibration isolation solves the issue without replacing anything. Escalating straight to council is rarely necessary if the underlying mechanical issue gets fixed first.
