Open-plan kitchen and living layouts are common in Brisbane homes and renovations, and they make good kitchen ventilation more important, not less — cooking heat, steam and grease-laden air spread further before an underpowered rangehood ever catches it. If your rangehood just hums along without really clearing the air, or you’re planning a kitchen renovation, it’s worth understanding what proper ventilation actually involves.
Ducted vs Recirculating Rangehoods
A ducted rangehood pulls air through ducting and expels it outside the house, while a recirculating (charcoal filter) rangehood simply filters the air and blows it straight back into the kitchen. Recirculating units are common in units and townhouses where external ducting wasn’t planned for, but they do far less for heat, humidity and lingering cooking odour than a properly ducted system, and the charcoal filters need regular replacement to keep working at all.
Why Proper Ducting Matters in Brisbane’s Climate
Brisbane’s humidity means moisture from cooking doesn’t dissipate as readily as it would in a drier climate, and grease-laden air that isn’t ducted outside tends to settle on cabinetry, extractor fans and nearby smoke alarms over time. A rangehood ducted straight to an external wall or roof vent clears heat, steam and odour properly, rather than just moving the problem around the kitchen or, worse, into the roof cavity.
Common Problems in Older Kitchens
- A recirculating rangehood installed where external ducting was actually achievable
- Ducting that dead-ends in the roof space instead of an external vent
- Undersized ducting that restricts airflow and makes the rangehood work harder and louder than it should
- No external vent cover, letting weather or pests into the ducting
- A rangehood motor rated below what the kitchen size and cooktop type actually need
Renovations and New Kitchens
A kitchen renovation is the easiest time to fix ventilation properly, since walls, cabinetry and ceilings are already opened up. Island bench rangehoods need a duct run either up through the ceiling or, less commonly, down and out through the floor, and the run length and number of bends both affect how well the system performs — a long, bent duct run needs a more powerful motor to move the same volume of air as a short, straight one. Getting the ducting path right at the design stage avoids expensive rework later.
Sizing a Rangehood Correctly
Rangehoods are rated by airflow (m³/hr), and the right size depends on kitchen volume, cooktop width, and whether you’re cooking with gas or induction — gas cooking generally needs more extraction capacity than induction for the same cooktop size. An undersized rangehood will run at full speed constantly and still not clear the kitchen properly, which is a common source of homeowner frustration with new kitchens.
Compliance Considerations
Rangehoods need adequate clearance above the cooktop for fire safety, and any ducting penetrating an external wall or roof should have a proper weatherproof vent cover. Where a rangehood is wired into its own circuit rather than a general power point, that wiring needs to meet AS/NZS 3000 like any other electrical work in the kitchen.
