Most Brisbane homes now have RCDs (safety switches) fitted, but having one installed isn’t the same as having one that works. Like any mechanical safety device, an RCD can fail over time, and the only way to know it’s still doing its job is to test it. Here’s how often testing should happen, who’s responsible, and what the process actually involves.
What an RCD Actually Does
A residual current device monitors the current flowing through a circuit and cuts the power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking to earth — the kind of fault that causes electric shocks. It’s the single most effective device for preventing electrocution in a home, but it relies on an internal trip mechanism that can seize or degrade with age, dust, or lack of use, the same way a smoke alarm sensor can fail silently if it’s never tested.
The Push-Button Test — Every Three Months
Every RCD has a small “T” or “Test” button on the front. Queensland guidance recommends pushing this every three months. It should trip the switch immediately, cutting power to the circuits it protects. If it doesn’t trip, or trips sluggishly, that RCD needs to be looked at by a licensed electrician — don’t just reset it and move on. This test takes about thirty seconds per switchboard and is the one piece of home electrical maintenance most homeowners can safely do themselves.
Professional Testing Under AS/NZS 3760
Beyond the push-button check, RCDs should have their trip time properly measured with a calibrated tester every couple of years for owner-occupied homes, and this becomes a formal obligation for rental properties. AS/NZS 3760 sets out the trip-time thresholds an RCD must meet — a device that eventually trips isn’t good enough if it takes too long to do it. A licensed electrician tests each RCD with proper equipment and provides a compliance record.
Rental Properties Have Stricter Rules
Queensland’s rental electrical safety requirements are more prescriptive than owner-occupied homes: rental properties must have RCDs fitted to all relevant circuits, and landlords must have them tested by a licensed electrician within set intervals, with records kept. Signs Your RCD May Be Due for Attention
- The push-button test doesn’t trip the switch, or it feels stiff or slow
- You’re not sure when it was last professionally tested, if ever
- The switchboard is older and doesn’t have modern combination RCD/circuit breakers

- Nuisance tripping is happening often, which can point to a fault rather than the RCD doing its job correctly
How Many RCDs Should a Home Have
Current standards require RCD protection on power and lighting circuits, and dedicated RCDs for higher-risk circuits like pool pumps. Older Brisbane homes with a single RCD covering the whole board offer far less protection than a modern switchboard with RCDs split across circuits — if one circuit faults, only that circuit drops out rather than the whole house losing power.
