What the Upgrade Involves
Upgrading from single-phase to three-phase isn’t just a switchboard swap — it requires Energex (Queensland’s distribution network operator) to provide a three-phase connection to your property. The process:
- Licensed electrician assessment — your electrician checks whether three-phase is available in your street and calculates your required load
- Energex application — your electrician lodges a Service and Installation (S&I) application with Energex on your behalf; you don’t contact Energex directly
- Energex connection — Energex upgrades the service cable from the street to your meter; lead times in Brisbane are typically 2–6 weeks
- New switchboard installation — a three-phase switchboard (main switch, RCDs per circuit group, and appropriate circuit breakers) replaces your existing board
- Load balancing — circuits are distributed evenly across the three phases to prevent nuisance tripping and maximise efficiency

Can You Avoid a Full Three-Phase Upgrade?
Sometimes. If you’re adding a single large appliance and the rest of the home’s load is modest, a licensed electrician may be able to install a dedicated sub-board wired from a single-phase circuit for that appliance. This can be a cost-effective short-term solution.
If you’re planning multiple high-draw additions in the next few years, though, doing a full three-phase upgrade once is almost always more economical than doing it in stages.
Queensland Compliance
All three-phase electrical work in Queensland must be carried out by a licensed electrician and comply with AS/NZS 3000 (the Australian Wiring Rules). The licensed electrician must issue a Certificate of Compliance (Electrical Work) before the supply is energised.
